The Gay Center, Tel Aviv-Yafo
The Gay Center, located in the Meir Garden in Tel Aviv-Yafo, was established in January, 2008. The Gay Center was built as a response to a survey conducted in 2004, identifying the needs of the gay community. The findings of the survey focused on six main areas that are now reflected in the services offered at The Gay Center. ''Cultural activities'' (theater, cinema, music and dance), ''social/support groups'' (social groups, multi-aged support, coping with the difficulties of sexual identity), ''empowerment of community organizations'' (Israel Gay Youth, women, religious, parents, trans, sexual disorders, the elderly, people infected with HIV were AIDS, and their families), ''support services'' (psychological support and legal advice and health), ''education and leisure'' (workshops and courses), and ''a cafe/safe environment''. The Gay Center exists under the premise that premise that every person regardless of age, race, or gender has the fundamental right to a safe space, comfort, personal security, self-realization, and answers to questions regarding sex and sexuality.
The Gay Center was constructed as a Bauhaus-style structure that Samuel Mestechkin planned and established in 1920. The complex includes three floors. Each floor has three or four multi-purpose rooms used by all members of the center and outside organizations (not just the LGBT community). The entry level of the center has a theater, cafe, and a reception desk. The first floor has a conference room, a kindergarten/gymboree, and a room for a gay senior organization, The Oldies Club. The second floor has a variety of rooms leased to a groups and social institutions, including LGBT legal services, Hoshen (an organization for change and LGBT rights), and and a medical clinic. The top floor there is a room dedicated for Israel Gay Youth and Trans Support.
